Abstrakt     Unexpected cardiac and respiratory arrest are not just conditions, which usually terminate in a few minutes in death, but are at the same time a test of the emergency medical service's performance and effectiveness in providing out of hospital resuscitations. This graduation thesis deals with the characteristics and courses of resuscitations performed by the emergency medical teams of the Zdravstveni dom Kranj ducing the period from January 1st 1990 till December 3l st 1995. During this period 94 persons with cardiac and respiratory arrest were resuscitated. This means 15,6 resuscitations on the average per year (21,3 resuscitations per 100 000 inhabitants per year). 71,3 % of all patients were men. The mean age of the resuscitated was 55,1 years. Injuries and poisonings were the reason for resuscitation in 10,6 %. 46 (48,9%) of the resuscitated were delivered to hospital, 9 persons (9,6 %) were discharged alive. 67 patients were resuscitated because of cardial reasons, which means an average of 11,2 resuscitations per year, that is 15,2 resuscitations per 100 000 inhabitants per year, of which 9 persons (13,4 %) were discharged from hospital alive. On December 31st 1995 6 of all resuscitated patients were still alive. The average survival of these 6 patients after resuscitation was 28 months. 3 patients who died after discharge from hospital lived for 20,8 months on the average. Although the survival rates are favourable, the results of this thesis show that improvements in the organisation of work and number of personnel are necessary in the emergency medical service of the Zdravstveni dom Kranj.
