Abstrakt		The purpose of this article is to present results of the research on spreading of smoking habits among boys in secondary school center 'Branko Brelih" in Nova Gorica. Data were gathered by anonymous questionnaire in the first and in the third class of the school in February 1989 and in February 1997. The proportion of smokers is significantly decreased in 1989 -1997 period from 40,7% to 32,8%, but there is a higher proportion of regular smokers now. The number of daily smoked cigarettes didn't change among regular smokers. At 1997 the number of smokers didn't increase in the third class as it has been the fact in 1989. Their the higher proportion of smokers at the lower degree of education level as it was expected. There are much more smokers among boys who live in student hostel then among other pupils who live at home during the week. Smoking of both parents seems to be a great risk factor. Nearly half of all smokers start to smoke before the age of fifteen, one third of them start in secondary school. The main reason for lighting the first cigarette is curiosity, the second are society dependent reasons. The data &om questionnaire in February 1997 answer the questions: what do pupils think about smoking, where do they notice the activities for smoke prevention and what do they think about. The television is outstanding as the most important information medium. There is the big difference between smokers and nonsmokers activities in their free time. The data confirm the well known fact that smoking is associated with more passive life style.
