Abstrakt     Periodontal diseases are among the most common diseases in Slovenia and in the world. Bacteria from plaque and host response are the main cause for periodontal tissue inflammation. The polymorphonuclear leukocytes are abundantly present in gingival lesion and in cervicular fluid because of plaque accumulation and development of chronic inflammation. Different enzymes and oxygen reactive intermediate products produced by phagocytes are aimed for microbial killing. On the other hand, these mediators could increase inflammation and destruction of connective tissue and bone. The aim of our research was to verify the hypothesis that inflammation and tissue destruction can be suppressed by application of antioxidants. The healing of periodontal tissues may be stimulated as well. Experimental periodontitis in upper and lower jaw was induced by elastic ligatures around second, third and fourth premolars and first molars on 15 male beagle dogs. The dogs were 2.5 years old and approx. 12 kg in weight. Nine months after the beginning of the experiment the ligatures were removed and after three weeks of stabilization period the teeth were supragingivally scaled. The dogs were devided into three groups. The first group received a liposome-encapsulated superoxide dismutase (SOD), the second group a liposome-encapsulated catalase (CAT_ and the third group received both enzymes. In each group treatment of modalities were tested; i.e.: supragingival scaling (1), supragingival scaling and enzymes (2), supra and subgingival scaling and root planning (3) and supra and subgingival scaling and root planning with subgingival application of enzymes (4).
