Abstrakt     For the sake of sistematic presentation is the development of medical thought and practice in Koper from ancient times to the 17th century inclusive divided into chapters. Colour additions and citations, noted at the end together with the list of extensive literature, complement the next. The introduction contains the aims as well as the ways and methods of research. The development in a small Istrian town can't and musn't be described separately from the historical development and the development of medicine in Istria and neighbouring countries. Therefore a chronological analysis of economic, political, cultural and ethnical conditions through countries is given at first. The development of medical though and practic is sistematically presented through four chapters. The first chapter descibes basic tendencies of the development of public health and municipal regulation of the town. Drinking water and food supply are also included. The above mentioned is followed by a chronological presentation of diseases and epidemics appearing through centuries and deciding fate of the town. The third chapter represents the most extensive part and contains chronological bibliography of all medical workers, residents of Koper and foreigners who worked more or less successfully and notably in Koper. Mentioned chapter includes all data that are possible to be found in the extensive quoted literature. Only some short, important passages describe the prominent Santorio Santorio who is widely presented in literature. Further on are listed all health and humanitarian institutions and is analysed the developing health legislation through centuries. Next you can find a shorter description of elements of medical culture, presented in the extremely important, world famous Hrastovlje frescoes. The following passage includes a discussion on development and role of health service in Koper till the end of the 17th century. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
