Abstrakt     Cell colony counting in biology and in mediclne is a routine task mostly performed manually. An automated machine vision system is proposed to solve the problem of increasing number of samples demanding tiring and tedious manual counting. An image of a petri-dish with cell colonies is grabbed with a CCD camera and processed by computer. Global thresholding is used for lmage segmentation and a component labelling algorithm is ased for labelling objects. Then a watershed seeded region growing algorithm is applied to separate touching colonies represented by only one object. The system was tested with 16 petri-dish samptes. The reproducibility error was below 7.8% and the accuracy was between -1.5% and -13.5%. Samples with very small and very bright colonies showed worse results when processed with the same parameters as the rest of the samples. Inaccuracy can be reduced with changes in the hardware implementation of the system.
