Abstrakt | The most important electrophysiological methods used in diagnosis of dementia include electroencephalography (EEG) and evoked (visual or auditory event-related) potentials. There is a characteristic decrease in frequency bands in EEG of patients with dementia, reflecting the cerebral cholinergic dysfunction. However, distinctive EEG features can differentiate certain types of dementia. Using the visual evoked potentials (VEPs), an unusual combination of normal pattern VEPs and abnormal flash VEPs can be detected in patients with Alzheimer's dementia. In auditory modality, abnormal mid-latency responses (the P1 wave) and long-latency responses (the N2 and the P3 wave) have been described. A sensible use of electrophysiology can be of help in (i) differentiating dementia from other disorders, (ii) in differential diagnosis of various demen- tias, (iii) in focusing the topographical distribution of the process, (iv) in assessing the degree of impairment, (v) in prediction of the outcome, and (vi) in the follow-up of the treatment. | |
