Abstrakt     The aim of infection control is to decrease the number of hospital infections and to improve the quality in hospital. The major tasks of infection control team are policies, consultation, education and surveillance. To fulfill these duties the infection control team should have adequate personnel resources and functioning organisation within the hospital. Ministry of health of Slovenia prepares regulation for structures required for infection control programme. The situation in different european countries shows differences between them and differences between national regulations and reality. The infection control programme for individual hospitals shoud be based on national recommendations. In Slovenia we still do not have them. Infection control team consists of infection control doctor and infection control nurse, both with special postgraduate education in this field. The support of managerial structures is essential for their work. The organisation of infection control outside hospital (long term facilities, day clinics) is not defined. Small clinics can not afford their own infection control personell, but perhaps public health organisations can provide infection control teams working in their area. We think that infection control issues in Slovenia should get more attention, perhaps by creating a national programme.
