Abstrakt     Cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR) is a common opportunistic infection in patients with advanced HIV disease. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency, clinical course and outcome of CMVR in patients treated at the University Hospital of Infectious Diseases "Dr. Fran Mihaljević" in the period from January 1995 to December 1998. CMVR was diagnosed in 19 (26%) of 73 patients with AIDS. 16 of these 19 patients died. The median age was 39.6 years (range, 32.1-62.7). The median survival (Kaplan-Meier method) was 185 days. All treated patients received intravenous ganciclovir, one patient with a sight threatening relaps received ganciclovir and foscarnet. Secondary prophylaxis was stopped in 3 patients after immunological improvement (CD4+ cell count above 150/mm3) and one of these patients relaps after 5 months.
