Abstrakt     The incidence of viral sexually transmitted diseases has been inreasing worldwide. Nowadays, beside chlamydial infection, human papillomavirus infection and genital herpes represent the most common diseases of the kind. Human herpes viruses, that are transmitted sexually, are: herpes simplex virus type 1 and particulary type 2, the last being epidemicaly widespread in developed countries, provoking new therapeutic strategies due to intensive subclinical shedding; female as well as male genitals may chronically shede Epstein-Barrvirus; the prevalence of EBV infection is closely related to sexual activity, including kissing; cytomegalovirus shedding has been detected from cervix and male urethra; the CMV seroprevalence in homosexual males has been estmated around 95 %; primary CMV infection during pregnancy may cause severe congenital diseases; it may lead to fatal disease in immunocompromised host; human herpesvirus 8, discovered in 1994, represents a possible cofactor in development of Kaposi sarcoma in HIV-seropositive patients and is most probably sexually transmitted.
