Abstrakt     Anaemia can occur as an independent disorder but is more frequently the consequence of other diseases. The classification of an anaemia is less important than the identification of its cause. The history, physical examination, the complete blood count and possibly other specific tests are used in the diagnosis of anaemia. The classification based on the mean corpuscular volume and the reticulocyte count is the most helpful in determinig the aetiology in practice. Because of limited possibilities for diagnosis in the primary care setting, the general practitioner can identify only the cause of a symptomatic anaemia or an iron deficiency anaemia. Normocytic anaemias without typical manifestations of the basic illness, macrocytic anaemias and anaemias due to acute internal haemorrhage or increased red cell destruction require special tests and therefore fall into the specialist's domain. During the diagnostic evaluation, patients with severe anaemia often receive symptomatic therapy. When the cause of the disorder has been identified, specific treatment can sometimes be applied.
