Abstrakt     In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), anemia is usually normocytic, normochromic, more rarely hypochromic, and it is most often the result of chronic inflammation. Therefore a blockage of the release of stored iron from the macrophages to the circulation occurs despite sufficient amounts of iron in the organism. The erythrocyte life-span is also shortened. Furthermore, iron deficiency was detected in 52% of patients, vitamin B12 deficiency in 29% and folic acid deficiency in 21% of patients. Anti-inflammatory drugs also play a significant role in the occurrence of anemia, and nonsteroid antiphlogistics in particular as they cause ulcer disease and concealed blood loss through feces. Considering all th above stated facts, the causes of anemia in RA are most often combined and complex. Treatment is usually connected with successful treatment of the basic disease.
