Abstrakt     Early defibrillation is a resuscitation procedure with the greatest impact on survival in patients with sudden cardiac arrest. There is an inverse relationship between the success of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the interval between cardiac arrest and initiation of defibrillation. With the advent of automatic defibrillators this interval has been notably reduced. Semi-automatic defibrillators can be effectively used by lay people. The European Resuscitation Council has published basic resuscitation guidelines intended for both medical personnel and lay people. The algorithm for the use of automatic defibrillators in sudden cardiac arrest differs from the classical algorithm, and includes instructions for the initiation of defibrillation by either one or two resuscitators. Over the past two years the use of defibrillators has become an integral part of the system of emergency service in Slovenia. The official statistics indicate that currently 42 defibrillators are available in this country, yet there is a lack of data concerning the frequency and results of their use.
