Abstrakt     Background. Hearing is a distinct ability of the ear to receive in a particular way, that is to hear, only some of the sound waves among many in the surroundings. The disturbance in the information exchange is joint to all people with damaged hearing. The hearing impairment changes the individual's personality, reduces his or hers abilities and quality of life. In the early childhood, hearing is indispensable for developing speech and language and it affects the intellectual and emotional development of the entire personality. Persons with damaged hearing often suffer from disfunction of vestibular apparatus as well, for hearing and vestibular sense organs are ontogenetically and anatomically closely connected. The purpose of this research was to identify hearing impairment and vestibular system damage in infants at risk of an early brain damage. Some risk factors for hearing and vestibular appartus impairment are at the same time also rich factors for early brein damage. The aim was also to establish whic are the factors who have this negative effect on the rise of these disturbances. Our presumption was that infants at risk of an early brain damage have hearing and vestibular apparatus more frequently damaged than the rest of the population of the same age, as well as that the extent of neurological impairment coincides with the degree of hearing and vestibular apparatus damage. Patients and Methods. There were 110 infants aged up to twelve months included in the research. These were the infants with whom developmental disorder was detected by a paediatrician and an early brain damage was suspected. For this reason the infants were directed to the developmental neurologist. The measure for the inclusion in the research was a preliminary neurological examination at the Department of Developmental Neurology, Paediatric Hospital, University Medical Centre in Ljubljana.
