Abstrakt | Although the noninvasive transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TcB) has been found to be quite acceptable as a screening device for testing neonatal nespecific hyperbilirubinemia (NNH) this technology has not been generally accepted as an alternative to the routine sampling used to determine bilirubin levels. Therefore, from practical and scientific point of view it seems meaningful to establish the cut point for measurement of the serum bilirubin concentration (SeB) by measuring the yellow colour of the skin as an alternative to invasive venous blood sampling for determination of total reacting serum bilirubin in icteric newborn infants during phototherapy (BIFO) or without it. To evaluate the TcB method as an alternative to invasive venous blood sampling for determination of SeB the research has been taken in 348 icteric term newborn infants during BIFO or without it in the Neonatal Unit of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the General Hospital Celje, Slovenia, in two different research periods between 1989 and 1993. Considering possibilities of different environmental conditions with BIFO the author presented original method of measuring TcB in newborn infants during BIFO. The results of the first research period show that positive corelation between TcB and SeB in infants during BIFO was significantly higher than in infants withouth BIFO (P<0,001). Comparisons between younger (day one, day two) and older newborn infants (day three, four and five) show significantly higher positive correlation (P<0,05) in older infants during BIFO. There was also determined the cut point above which the values of SeB could be higher than the values of TcB in icteric newborn infants during BIFO or without it. A problem arising from clinical use of transcutaneous bilirubinometry in infants during BIFO or without it was too wide range in the values of SeB by measuring TcB.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters) | |
