Abstrakt     In this section I have shown the epidemiological characteristics of cancer in municipalties in the region of Ravne in comparison with Slovenia over the ten - year period from 1979 - 1099. I included data on incidence, mortality, hospitalization, specialist service and basic health practices. The intension of the study was to establish whether the cancer in the municipalities in the Ravne region differs from that in Slovenia, whether the chosen method of age standsrdisation can influence results, and to what extent the data collected in Slovenia can be used for an analysis of the population health. On the basis of descriptive analysis of the data, I established that some locations of cancer sites in the region of Ravne are higher and other locations of cancer sites lower than in Slovenia. With such results we cannot conslude whether municipalities in the Ravne region are more of less threatened than the rest of Slovenia. These results give us more of an orientation for further necessary in-depth analysis of epidemiological studies. By using different methods of age standardisation I established that the chosen method does not have a great effect on the calculation of age - adjusted rates. Which method is chosen depends on the data which we have at our disposal, on the number of people in each age group, and with whom we will be compared. The best data for showing the health state are data on incidence and mortality, which we can adjust for age. Here we must bear in mind that data on incidence sannot be substituted with any other data. Data on mortality are not the best indicator of the health state, because too many other causes can effect this data. Data on hospitalisation can be a better indicator of the health state in the case where there is the possibility of calculating the incidence of hospitalisation. However this is just the incidence of hospitalisation and not of illness. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
