Abstrakt     Background and purpose: In the recent past, the technology of ultrasonic imaging instruments has been significantly advanced. Color-coded Doppler (duplex) sonography (CCDS) has improved the evaluation of the hemodynamics of the carotid and vertebral arteries and made a reliable differentiation between normal vessels, hypoplasia, kinking, stenosis and steal of precerebral arteries possible. This paper reviews the present state of sonoangiography as it applies to the carotid and vertebral circulation. It defines basic considerations in imaging blood flow, discusses the flow parameters that are measured in Doppler sonography and describes the range of pathology found in the carotid and vertebral circulation. Results and conclusions: Combined with quantitative spectral analysis, color Doppler imaging provides rapid and accurate evaluation of vascular stenosis and occlusion and flow reveals. Doppler imaging does not provide a substitute for proper pulsed Doppler examination and in some cases, fails to reveal subtle but valuble findings that are provided by a pulsed Doppler waveform. Doppler imaging and duplex imaging with spectral analysis are complementary methods.
