Abstrakt | The influence of pilocarpine, a parasympathomimetic agent, and biperiden, an anticholinergic, on the secretion and composition of saliva was studied in 69 patients undergoing radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck, with the salivary glands included in the irradiation field. The patients were randomized into three groups: group A received pilocarpine, group B received biperiden during radiotherapy and pilocarpine for 6 weeks after the completion of radiotherapy, while group C received no medication during or after radiotherapy. Electrolyte levels in the patients' saliva were measured before the beginning of radiotherapy, after a dose of 30 Gy, on completion of radiotherapy and 3,6 and 12 months after the completion of radiotherapy. All three groups of patients had increased salivary content of calcium and decreased levels of phosphate during radiotherapy. | |
