Abstrakt     At the begining of the study, a single dentist performed 145 class I and class II restorations using glass-ionomer, composite resin and amalgam. Amalgam restorations served as controls, and at least one restoration of the same class as the glass-ionomer or composite resin was performed in the same patient. Restorations were performed under routine conditions using a standardised clinical procedure. The clinical evaluation was made according to USPHS guidelines (Ryge criteria for direct evaluations, Ryge 1977). After one year, the mean recall rate for all materials was 94.5% (137 restorations). The failure rate (USPHS ratings C) was 0o/a. All the restoration placed were rated clinically acceptable (USPHS ratings A or B). The variables showing the highest frequencies in restorations ranked as Bravo were interfacial staining and marginal adaptation.
