Abstrakt     The removal of pollutants by individual ecological systems in the Danube catchment area and in catchment areas of some of its tributaries represents a new and important view' for the solution of water quality in the Danube River and in the Black Sea. The project included research case studies such as karst lakes, water reservous, Boodplam forests and wetlands. The results indicate that the clearsing function of the mentioned and other systems shoul be taken into account as early as when designing and operating the water reservoirs, at the reconstruction of wetlands, and particularly at the area management in the Danube Delta. The project results further show that a whole system of banlss and alluvial lands should be considered at the evaluation of pollutant retaining capacity as well as the ecosystem structure and general land use within the landscape complexes. The data obtained from the project (namely Task 2) can be used for further modeelling of partial processes, especially from the viewpoint of pollutant transport between the individual ecosystems in the catchment area. The project also included an economic evaluation of the function of pollutant removal and retaining capacity (mainly N and P) of the individual ecosystems although it appears necessary to furthcr precise the methodology in this sense.
