Abstrakt     In metabolic management and prevention of diabetic complications sufficient intakes of antioxidant vitamins and minerals are fundamental. The antioxidant nutrients are supposed to be adequate in a well macronutrient balanced diet containing fruit, vegetables and starchy food. The aim of this study was to determine the content of antioxidants in 14 intensive insulin treated diabetics (IDP, 71 24-hours dietary recalls) and in standard diabetic hospital food (HDP). The results were compared with nutritional recommendations for diabetics and with intake of normal population. The copper, manganese, a-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and B-carotene in both diabetic diets matched up with recommendations. However the selenium in IDP and HDP and zinc in HDP did not attain the recommendations nor the values in normal population intakes. It seems that dietaty pattern in diabetic diet involves deficiency in selenium and zinc. The liberalisation of dietary regimen in intensive insulin treated diabetics could additionally deteriorate their food habits and increase the complications risk.
