Abstrakt | Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the changes in retinal light sensitivity of the peripheral visual field in diabetic patients before and after panretinal argon laser photocoagulation (PRP) compared with the controls and to determine the correlation between changes in rtinal light sensitivity and patient age, the duration of the disease and the number of applied laser burns. Patients and methods: Our study includes 25 eyes of 17 noninsulin-dependent diabetic patients with severe nonproliferative and early proliferative diabetic retinopathy and the control group (12 eyes of 12 patients). In all patients a threshold visual filed analysis was carried out with the C 30/60-1 program of the automated Humphrey Field Analyzer before and after PRP. Results: Retinal light sensitivity in the entire peripheral visual filed in diabetic patients was already reduced before laser therapy. After the PRP the reduction was almost 40% compared with the controls. A strong decrease in peripheral retinal light sensitivity was significant in a larger number of laser burns (P<0.05). No correlation was established between visual field loss and patient age or the duration of the disease (P>0,05). Discussion: Our study shows that peripheral visual field loss following PRP is significant and dependds on the number of applied laser burns. | |
