Abstrakt     Repetitive hand motions make dental personnel particularly prone tp cumulative trauma disorders. The most common affiction of the upper extremities experiences by dental personnel is the carpal tunnel syndrome. Inflammation of tendons of the wrist results in compression of the median nerve, leading to hand numbness, pain and weakness in the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers. Less common cumulative trauma disorders are tenosynovitis of the thumb and dorsum, unilateral Raynaud's phenomenon, cubital tunnel syndrome and others. Recognition of the problem, early treatment and reduction of other repetitive motions in non work related situations or avoidance of hobbies involving similar movements are helpful in controlling these syndromes. The incidence of cumulative trauma disorders can also be reduced by quality equipment, regular maintenance of instruments and staff education in their proper use, ergonomic design of the dental opeatory, instruments and equioment, and staff education in proper posture.
