Abstrakt		Among 96 subjects in which esssential hypertension was diagnosed at an age betwetn 7 and 19 years, retinal changes were discovered in only one case. At a follow-up examination of 62 subjects 10 to 12 years later, 1996 had hypertension, 58% borderline hypertension and 23% had normotension. Six of the examined young adults showed a retinopathy, which did not exceed grade 1, hypertension and borderline hypertension were found in 3 cases each. In contrast to data from the literature, the study shows that in essential hypertension during childhood retinal vascular changes are very rare and can be detected only in 10% after 10- to 12-year follow-up.
