Abstrakt		The portion of elderly people in the Slovene society has been increasing steadily in recent years. The life expectancy is rising, but at the same time there is an increasing number of diseases witch are characteristic for the old age. Dementia as it is described in article, is not a direct consequence of ageing even though it occurs relatively frequently in the old age. In the article dementia is presented as a clinical syndrome. It is also discussed the possible causes, its clinical picture and its treatment. Unfortunately the prognosis is not very favorable, because the most causes of dementia are irreversible due to a progressive development of disease.
