Abstrakt     Background. Number of elderly people is increasing. The independence and functional abilities of elderly are influenced by aging previous and current diseases and injuries environment and its influence on a person in previous life. The aim of present study was to find out the functional ability of active and sedentary elderly people in Slovenia with which we will be able to compare the functional ability of elderly with different impairments and disabilities. Methods. 103 volunteers from 60 to 90 years old, 69 years on average (SD 6,7 years) who live at home were tested. They were divided inito sedentary and active group. The criteria for active group were to be physicaly active at least three times per week in the last thalf year. The activity had to last ast least 40 minutes and beetwen the activity had to sweat or gasp. All who did not meet these criteria were included into sedentary group. The functional fitness test (Rikli 1999) was used. The test had nine subtests: sit and rich, scratch test, arm over head, chair stand, arm curl, timed "Up and go" one leg balance, 2 minute step-in-place and 9-minute walk. Izvleček     Izhodišča. Število starejših ljudi tudi v Sloveniji hitro narašča. Na samostojnost in funkcioniranje starejših vplivajo sam proces staranja, bolezni in poškodbe, okolje oziroma ovire v okolju ter vzorci obnašanja in vplivi okolja, ki so prevladovali v aktivnem obdobju starejše osebe. Namen našega dela je bil ugotoviti funkcionalno stanje aktivnih in neaktivnih starejših ljudi v Sloveniji, s katerim bomo lahko primerjali funkcionalno stanje starejših z različnimi okvarami in prizadetostmi. Metode. Testirali smo 103 prostovoljce, stare 60 do 90 let, v povprečju 69 let (sd 6,7 leta), ki živijo doma. Razdelili smo jih v aktivno in neaktivno skupino. V aktivno skupino smo uvrstili vse, ki se zadnjega pol leta redno najmanj trikrat na teden ukvarjajo s telesno dejavnostjo. Dejavnost mora trajati vsaj 40 minut med vadbo pa se mora oseba prepotiti in/ali zadihati. Vse, ki tega merila niso izpolnjevali, smo uvrstili v neaktivno skupino. Uporabili smo funkcionalni test za stare (Rikli 1999), ki je sestavljen iz devetih podtestov: prožnost sede, prožnost ramenskega obroča in zgornjih udor, dvigovanje rok, vstajanje s stola, dvigovanje uteži, test vstani-pojdi, ravnotežje na eni nogi, dve minuti stopanja na mestu ter devetminutna hoja.
