Abstrakt     Fourty intubated patients were prospectively evaluated for incidences of endogenous or exogenous colonization and hospital pneumonia and randomized into the group where exogenous colonization and hospital pneumonia and randomised into the group where endotracheal suctioning was done by open single catheter and a group cared with the closed tracheal suction system. Results show that tracheal colonizatin appeared in 32 among 40 patients after 0.81 days. 68% were endogenously colonized; among the exogenously colonized was the same incidence between closed and open system cared patients. Pneumonia developed in 37.5% after 6.3 days and as for colonization, no difference was found between the groups. This study shows no superiority of each suction system, and confirms closed systems does not cause increased morbidity and mortality due to nosocomial pneumonia.
