Abstrakt     Sepsis is a significant cause of death in patients treated in intensive care units. Early and accurate diagnosis is extremely important for the patients' survival. A primary role in sepsis pathophysiology is played by cytokines (TNF, IL-1 and IL-6) secreted by the organism's immune system cells. The soluble interleukin-2 receptor (s-IL-2R) is a soluble cytokine receptor which directly reflects the levels of the IL-2 receptor on lymphocytes T, which, along with the IL-2 itself, is important for the specific immune response. Cytokines are also released into by cells during times of stress, for example in athletes during pre-comptetition trainig and competitions. Our hypothesis stated that the concentrations of cytokines (TNF, IL-1beta, IL-6) and s-IL-2R in the control group, in athletes after severe physical exertion and sepsis patients would be significantly different. Based on the differences in these cytokine concentrations, and also on the examination of the dynamics of plasma concentration of cytokines and s-IL-2R and the relationship between the amounts of cytokines and s-Il-2R and the clinical concept of sepsis, we prove their diagnostic and prognostic significance in sepsis cases. The cytokines and their soluble receptors in serum and plasma were measured by meand of radioimmunological test (RIA) and enzymoimmunological tests (ELISA). First, we determined the normal concentration ranges for cytokines (TNF IL-1beta, IL-6) and s-IL-2R in fresh plasma, in plasma prepared after 24 hours and in the serum of healthy blood donors. Then we compared the concentrations of cytokines and s-IL-2R in healthy athletes after severe physical exertion. We attempted to determine the connection between individual clinical symptoms and laboratory indicators of septic patients on the hand and the amount of cytokines and s-IL-2R on the other.
