Abstrakt     Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Chlamydia trachomatis genital tract infections are presented. The paper includes the results of Slovenian investigations beside literature overwiev of C. trachomatis infections in human reproduction. According to our results, prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis genital tract infections is comparable to those in industrialised countries thus representing an important cause of reproductive morbidity. Since the population screening is economically doubtful and effective primary prevention measures (i.e. vaccination) are lacking at the moment, early detection of uncomplicated cervical chlamydial infection is recommended, especially in the group of young sexually active women who represent the highest risk group for the disease. Early detection may prevent late and serious complications of upper genital tract infection with subsequent tubal factor infertility. The role of chlamydial genital infection during pregnancy with possible negative influence on pregnancy outcome is presented as well.. At the end we discuss practical clinical guidelines for detection and treatment chlamidial genital tract infection.
