Abstrakt     Much information about the professional life of Dr Josip Ipavec may be obtained from his personally hand-written records of practice for the period between November 1912 and February 1913. His practice covered a large area including Šentjur and its surroundings about which he made numerous house calls (by bicycle!) in all weathers and despite poor road conditions. He most often treated patients for eye ailments, rheumatism, gout, contusions etc. Despite being ill-equipped and lacking proper medications, he often delivered children into the world and, during this period, is recorded as having helped five persons to depart their mortal coil. Dentistry was a daily chore. Health insurance was rare and it is noted that he gave medical advice free of charge to the less fortunate. We can surmise from his writings that many of the medications he prescribed were prepared by his own hand using such ingredients as opium, codeine, valerian, ferrum etc.; quite a combination when one considers that no blood analyses or ressure measurements were ever taken. It is, however, evident from the doctor' s records that, in accordance with medical doctrine and therapy of the period, Dr Josip Ipavec was quite up to date.
