Abstrakt     Varus osteotomy of the femur was formerly the method of choice for the prevention and treatment of early osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip. Its use declined sharply with the introduction of total hip prostheses (THPs). However, THPs, whether cemented or cementless, also have their drawbacks and can create a number of problems. Hence, intertrochanteric osteotomy still has a place among operative procedures for the treatment of OA, especially in patients under 50 years of age. We have reviewed the records of 41 patients who underwent varus osteotomy 15-22 years ago. The average age at the time of operation was 38 years. At present, 16 patients walk without support and are free of pain. The remaining 25 patients were provided with a THP 10-20 after the osteotomy.
