Abstrakt     Image cytometric nuclear texture features (NTF) represent chromatin structure and organisation; therefore, they could be used as a surrogate end-point marker of the chromatin changes during neoplastic transformation of cells. The purpose of our study was to find out whether, a) a single NTF or a combination of NTF could discriminate between serous borderline malignant ovarian tumors and ovarian carcinomas; b) NTF could discriminate between borderline malignant tumors and different grades or stages of ovarian carcinoma; c) different grades or stages in the carcinoma group could also be classified accordingly, using NTF. Finally, we analysed the discriminative power of NTF regarding the survival of the patients with ovarian carcinomas. In our study we analysed NTF of 43 serous borderline malignant tumors and 67 carcinomas of the ovary. Archival tissue samples of ovarian tumors were used for the preparation of single cell suspensions according to the modified Hedley's method. Cell monolayer slides were stained according to the Feulgen-thionine method. Image cytometric analysis was performed by using an authomated high resolution image cytometer, namely Cyto-SavantTM. The results of our study showed that a single NTF could discriminate between borderline malignant tumors and carcinomas, whereas an excellent discrimination was achieved using a combination of three NTF (93%). A single NTF could reliably discriminate between borderline malignant tumors and poorly differentiated carcinomas or carcinomas in FIGO stage III and IV, however, the discrimination was less successful when discriminating borderline malignant tumors from well and moderately differentiated carcinomas or carcinomas in FIGO stage I and II.
