Abstrakt     The work deals with short-term and long-term results of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and percutaneous stent implantation in treatment of patients with chronic stenosis or occlusion of pelvic arteries. We compare early results and cumulative patency rate of PTA and stent placement in a prospective non-randomised study. The purpose of this study was to find out whether stent has better results than PTA in this pathology and if the difference is significant in such an extent as to change the opinion about indications of stent placement. The introduction comprises brief definitions of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and percutaneous stent implantation. The theme explanation emphasises the problem of comparing results among different studies because of different criteria and success definitions; results with PTA after five years extend form 60% to 90% and from 53% to 95% with stents. A case is presented, where results have changed from 50% to 80% in the same series of patients only by using different criteria. The need for further parallel studies is stressed, citing different authors since comparative studies are few and randomised studies are not yet available. The general part briefly describes the development and significance of accompanying technologies (fluoroscopy, contrast media, catheter technique). The development and working mechanism of PTA and different kinds of stents is presented. The authors original work comprises 152 patients which underwent 186 procedures; in 37 cases stent was used in 149 cases only PTA was done. The majority of procedures was done in patients with intermittent claudication (79% in the stent group and 86% in the PTA group). Stent was placed in 19% because of rest pain and in 3% because of gangrene. In the PTA group there were 10% of patients with rest pain and 5% with gangrene. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
