Abstrakt     Elderly patients represent about 30% of hospitalized persons in the USA and one third of the Health care budget is spent on them; and they only represent 11-12% of the entire population. Data on the Slovene population according to age groups show that 13.5% of the population are over the age of 65 in Slovenia and 14.0% in Maribor. At the Intensive Medical Care Department of Maribor Teaching Hospital more than half of the patients are over 65, their mortality rate being higher than in yunger patients. Most patients over 65 are hospitalized at the IMCD for cardiovascular disease and acute hemorrhage from the digestive tract. In patients over 65, the highest mortality rate is found in those with severe hypothermia combined with other diseases, cerebral hemorrhage and ishemic stroke, severe sepsis with circulatory disorders, cardiac arrest, after cardiopulmonary resuscitation as well as pulmonary edema and heart failure.
