Abstrakt     In most developed countries about 20% of the population are over 65 years of age. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus increases rapidly with age. After the age of 65 it amounts to between 15 and 20%, after the age of 80 even up to 40%. The majority of cases are type II diabetes. Morbidity and mortality are significantly higher in diabetics than in those without diabetes. Chronic complications of diabetes are more frequent in the elderly than in younger diabetics. Hypoglycemia presents a particular danger in the elderly as it may trigger myocardial infarction, cerebral stroke and cause the progression of ischemia in the extremities. The aims of controlling diabetes are set individually with regard to the patient's motivation, general state and expected survival. Treatment of hypertension and hyperlipemia in the elderly may even be of greater significance than strict glycemia management as we should keep in mind that due to the increased risk of hypoglycemia the strict management of diabetes may be dangerous for the patient.
