Abstrakt     The effects of angiotensin II are mediated by angiotensin II receptors. Clinically important are receptors type 1 (AT1) and type 2 (AT2). All known clinical effects are mediated by AT1 receptors. The physiological role of AT2 receptors is not completely understood. Angiotensin II receptor antagonists are as effective as other groups of drugs in antihypertensive treatment, but almost without side effects. They are supposed to have a favorable effect on atherosclerosis. In patients with congestive heart failure, angiotensin II receptor antagonists are as effective as inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme. The combination of inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme and angiotensin II receptor antagonists in patients with congestive heart failure, after myocardial infarction and in renal insufficiency is still under investigation.
