Abstrakt     Recent studies suggest that intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is associated with higher morbidity and mortality not only in neonatal and perinatal life but also in later life. These recent studies have demonstrated that persons with birthweight below the 10th percentile for gestational age, are at higher risk of developing ischemic heart disease, stroke, essential hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and respiratory diseases. It has been postulated that IUGR also affects the development of the fetal kidney. Namely, studies in humans and experimental animals have demonstrated that IUGR is associated with a reduction in the total number of nephrons (glomeruli). Individuals with a reduced number of nephrons have a diminished renal finctional reserve and are therefore at an increased risk of an unfavourable course of renal diseases. This hypothesis has also been confirmed in our studies which included children with IgA glomerulonephritis and children with minimal change nephrotic syndrome.
