Abstrakt     The obstetric system in the Netherlands is traditionally characterized by extensive primary health services, supported by more specialized care and is unique in the world. Midwives and general practitioners are responsible for normal deliveries, obstetricians for the deliveries considered high risk. Midwives have achieved a great reputation with their autonomous work with pregnant woman, who have been given the opportunity to give birth at home. The percentage of home deliveries has declined from 57% in 1970 to 31% in 1992. In Netherlands, midwives hold a key position in obstetrics care because of their training and their recognition by the government and the general society. They try to collect as much information (Kloostermans list of risk factors, Obstetrics Indication list 1987) as possible through conducting specific examinations on the basis of which they decide on the further treatment of the pregnant women. Dutch obstetric care providers pay adequate attention to the psychological and social aspects of pregnancy. Midwives are advisors who show understanding and respect; that is why pregnant women feel more comfortable with them than with a specialist obstetrician. The duties of a midwife are multifaceted and provide much variation. Midwives can work in a solo practice, in a health centre or in a hospital. Considering the differences between obstetrics care in Slovenia and Netherlands, the parents must have a choice, little is known about their considerations and about the role of different proffesional groups in how they choose. The future development of obstetric care in Slovenia should also respect the rights of parents to choose.
