Abstrakt     The Perinatal Information System of the Republic of Slovenia was set up in 1987 by a group of clinical professionals for research purposes. In a very short time it became a powerful tool for monitoring perinatal health indicators and the quality indicators for perinatal health services and maternity hospitals. After five years of project experience it became the nation-wide birth register which serves epidemiologists, reproductive health care providers, obstetricians and public health authorities. It has a character of multi-purpose population-based register which contains personal identification and information. The register includes data about family, personal and reproductive history, current pregnancy, labour and postpartal outcome for mother and child. Perinatal Information System of the Republic of Slovenia contributes substantially to monitoring, research, teaching and audit. The Project Board of Perinatal Information System of the Republic of Slovenia, appointed by the Minister of Health, is responsible for the number and type of data variables collected. The Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia is responsible for the day to day running of the register (professional and technical staff, technical support, software programs for data collection, logistics and communication with data collectors at the community level), statistical analysis, international communication and linkage with other registers (death register, central population register, specific health problems registers).
