Abstrakt     Background. Survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest has been link to witnessed collapse, bystander CPR and rapid emergency medical service response. The survival rate among out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is known to be poor. This study was performed to determine the level of basic life support knowledge in lay persons in Celje region. Methods. Questionnaires were put to fulfill by the random sample of 411 lay persons at the Celje Health Center between October 1 1996 and December 31 1998. The selected persons have never done anything in relation to the first aid professionally. The age ranged between 18 and 65 years. The questionnaire was of a closed type. RESULTS. Only one fifth of lay persons fulfilled the knowledge criteria for basic life support. The age and sex didn't affect the knowledge of basic life support. Lay persons with college education had better knowledge of basic life support. We found out that persons who took basic life support courses didn't have any better knowledge of the basic life support more than the ones who never took part in such courses. Conclusions. The level of basic life support knowledge in lay persons is low. The courses of first aid skills in Slovenia are not enough for adequate basic life support knowledge.
