Abstrakt     A short historical survey of pediatric intensive therapy in the Ljubljana Medical Centre is given with the emphasis of collecting vitally threatened children, especially newborns and infants, in the centre. In a modern unit for intensive care, the therapy of children with vital functions failure provides a higher probability of survival and, above all, better quality of life. Regular transport of newborns, accompanied by the pediatrician and nurse, from pediatric departmens in Ljubljana and regional hospitals and maternity hospitals to the Medical Centre was introduced in 1976, first by ambulance, and three years later also by helicopter. Until 1997, 2955 newborns were transported postnatally. In the article analyzes the measures undertaken in regional maternity hospitals and pediatric departments after the arrival of the team from the Intensive Care Unit of the Department for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Therapy, and during the transport itself. Over the last years, the percentage of intubated newborns and infants before the arrival of the team from the MC raised from 2 to 56%. Besides, the characteristic data of the time when the transport team was called to come for the jeopardized child, are presented. The organization aspects of postnatal transport are presented as well. A special chapter is dedicated to the efforts for establishing the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Ljubljana Maternitiy Hospital, enabling in utero transport, especially for newborns with very low birth weight. After the introduction of in utero transport, a marked decline in the work load at the Department for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Therapy of the MS was observed.
