Abstrakt | Two psychophysical methods, quantitative somatosensory thermotest and vibrametry, were used to evaluate clinically overt and clinically silent sensory abnormalities in 18 patients with definite multiple sclerosis. Seventeen percent of patients reported sensory symptoms at the interview (17 % thermal and 6 % vibratory), while neurologic examination disclosed sensory alterations in 78 %. Psychophysically determined thermal specific and/or thermal pain sensitivities were found to be altered in 89 % of the patients, while vibration sensitivity was impaired in 67 %. Quantitative somatosensory thermotest and vibrametry established randomly distributed and, occasionally, asymptomatic lesions. Psychophysical methods should have an important role in the representation of subclinical demyelinating lesions. | |
