Abstrakt     In a population of forty-one patients with spinal cord lesions due to traumatic injury experienced not less than 10 years prior to the start of the study, we conducted a study on risk factors and arterial changes in the lower extremities. The number of risk factors and their incidence in the study population definitely exceeded those found in the general population. The incidence of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) was six times greater than that reported for the general population of the same age. Three patients experienced a Q wave myocardial infarction at the age under 50. The results of the study furnished evidence of an earlier onset of atherosclerotic changes in patients with spinal cord lesions. Through preventive measures and detection and treatment of risk factors we could reduce the number of cardiovascular events that, eventually, result in an increased dependence of the patient on other people's help.
