Abstrakt     A new type of abnormality affecting the musculosceletal system has recently been recognised in uremic patients undergoing long term haemodialysis. Ninty one patients who had received haemodialysis for six years or more were reviewed to establish the incidence of joint problems. Thirty patients (26 women, 4 men) with haemodialysis for an average eight years showed progression of the following symptoms: carpal tunnel syndrome (15 pts) pain and swelling of joints, on x-ray bone erosions and pseudocysts formation (15 pts). Amyloid was observed microscopically in joint capsules, synovia and excised material at decompression surgery for carpal tunnel sundrome. In direct immunofluorescent study anti B2 microglobulin reacted positively with amyloid deposits in some cases. Dialysis arthropathy is a common complication of long term treatment with haemodialysis. It may be due to deposition of B2 microglobulin as one of effects of long term haemodialysis treatment and uraemia.
