Abstrakt     According to the generally accepted definition, the work of general practitioners is defined by activities in the fields of curative medicine, preventive medicine and counselling in healthy lifestyle. In the literature no published results of studies can be found, wherein the authors would simultaneously analyze the role and position of preventive activity in general practice, how often single preventive services are offered to the population as well as how and which characteristics of the practitioner himself and of his surgery influence the scope and the frequency of preventive measures. Since in Slovenia in 1991 the structure of public health system was altered, the aim of the research was to establish whether the change of structure has caused changes in the scope of preventive work and in the practitioners attitudes towards it. Thus, the study covers two random samples of one hundred general practitioners each, chosen in the years 1991 and 1996, respectively, which were surveyed by means of a questionnaire containing four groups of questions: about the characteristics of the practitioner and the surgery, division of labour, attitudes and smoking. The results of statistical analysis showed that in both periods the frequency of single preventive services and/or the preventive orientation itself in the general practitioners work were significantly influenced by the individual characteristics of the practitioner and his surgery. A comparison of the results of both examined periods showed that after the change of the structure of health system, the scope and frequency of most services in the area of primary preventive work (with healthy, asynptomatic persons) were significantly altered. The frequency of carrying out preventive and curative measures with afflicted persons was mostly changed in that part of activities that were taken away from the general practitioners area of work and added to other specialists ones.
