Abstrakt | Nitrogen removal from higly loaded wastewater was investigated. An activated sludge of several bacterial strains showing high nitrification activity was used in the experiments. The continuous nitrification/denitriifcation rate in a bench scale reactor was 59 g Nkg/ biomass d-1 with the addition of methanol , and 55 gN/kg biomass d-1 with the additon of sodium acetate. The acivated sludge also reduced the COD by more than 90%. The results show that methanol could be an appropriate carbon source with the peak activity achived at ratio C:N = 2. The high nitrification rate and the low C:N ratio and the use of methanol as the carbon source make the process economically interesting. | |
