Abstrakt		Patients with ulcerative colitis or familial polyposis can now have the option of undergoing construction of an internal pelvic pouch. The patient retains his/her natural waste diposal system and does not have a stoma. Disadvantages of the procedure include multiple loose stools; patients average four to six stools per day once the pouch is well established. Perianal skin irritation is common. Preventive perianal skin care is essential. Both pH balanced skin cleanser and moisture - barrier ointment are used as preventive and protective measures.
