Abstrakt     Sudden death is defined as a natural, unexpected death which occurs in healthy people as well as in those with a known heart disease in stable condition. The importance of it lies in its dramatic presentation and socio-economic significance. Fifty percent of all deaths from cardiovascular diseases take place suddenly. The main aim of our analysis was to point out the problem of sudden death to medical practitioners certifying death and to reach in future an estimated number of sudden deaths by better registration. In 1999 we collected all death certificates of persons who died suddenly and prepared a descriptive analysis. We found out that the number of sudden deaths registried in Slovenia reached only 1/4 of those presented in literature. The frequency of suddenly decreased was not in correlation with the mortality rate of ischaemic heart diseases, and the ratio between men and women was greater than expected. Women victims of sudden death under the age of 65 were mainly married, men were single or dicorced. The most important underlying causes of death were ischaemic heart disease - acute or chronic, cardiac arrest, hypertension and malignant neoplasm, and diseases of pulmonary system. In some graphical areas of Slovenia, sudden death is almost not registried, as it is not in some hospitals. Circadian rhythm, the place of death, the age at death, and the most important causes of death we registried were almost the same as those described in literature.
