Abstrakt     In our prospective study comprising 30 neonates irradiated by fiberoptic mat and 30 neonates irradiated by classic phototherapy, we compared the effectiveness of each method of treatment. The groups did not differ as regards birthweight which exceeded 2500 g, gestation period, nutrition, haematocrit values and initial serum bilirubin level. Both irradiation therapies lowered the level of indirect bilirubin essentially: in the group irradiated by fiberoptic mat it dropped from 253.43 to 15.7 micromol/I, and in the group treated by classic phototherapy from 253.14 to 177.15 micromol/l. The neonates from the group irradiated by fiberoptic mat were not separated from their mothers. Their contact was evaluated according to the Brazelton scale for evaluating the behaviour of neonates. The neonates who were not separated from their mothers were less restless and more easily comforted than those from the separated group. Phototherapy by fiberoptic mat irradiation is equally effective as the classic therapy as it preserves the tender bond between mother and child at the earliest stage.
