Abstrakt     By highway (HW) rub-off pollution, as a consequence of permanent traffic, we are often facing high hydraulic loading, but low pollutant concentration. Anyway, HW run-off causes, in long-term, changes in biodiversity, primary and secondary production or even sudden death of water organisms. Because of intense construction of HWs in Slovenia in the recent years, there is a lack of information on HW pollution in sensitive areas. Selection of suitable treatment systems is therefore questionable. Two models of sonstructed wetland for HW run-off were built where physical, chemical and biological treatment on the basis of microbial activity was carefully studied. In the models treatment efficiency of the water from retention basins Vransko (AC Vransko - Arja vas). Velika Gorica (AC Zagreb - Velika Gorica), and of the prepared water. loaded with metals, was monitored. Purification efficiency in the models with short experimental retention times vary for metals from 90 up to 99 % and for other characteristic paramaters between 50 - 85 %. The experiments on models with the prepared water, based on characteristics of HW run-off, will be continued to determine the substrate (artificial, natural) that is the most effective for reducing toxic substances and also enable intensive bacteria and macrophyte growth for efficient environmental protection from HWs.
