Abstrakt     Academician prof. Božidar Lavrič, M.D. was born on 10 November 1899 in Nova vas in Bloke. After graduating from a secondary school in 1918 in Ljubljana, he studied medicine in Zagreb, Paris and Prague where he received an M.D. degree in 1924. After probationary period in Maribor and Celje he specialized in surgery in surgical clinic in Zagreb. He spent some time in Paris for additional education. In 1930 he worked in surgical unit in Šibenik Hospital, where he invented his own method of surgical treatment of echinococs illnesses. Later he took up the post of assistant in the surgical clinic in Zagreb where he stayed until 1933. In 1933 he became the head of surgical unit in Maribor Hospital. In the autumn of the same year he went to Ljubljana where he became the chief of the second surgical unit General State Hospital. In 1936 he qualified as a private assistant professor of topographic anatomy. In addition, he spent the next few years teaching surgical propaedeutics. In 1940 he became full professor of surgery and chief of the surgical clinic of Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana. In 1941 he become a Dean of Faculty of Medicine. In the World War II immediatelly after the occupation, he joined the National Liberation Movement (NLM). He collected sanitary material, taught nurses, medical nurses, medical students and young doctors, joined the NLM, the basis of the war surgery and first aid in partisans and treated wounded partisans. As a result he was imprisoned in 1942 and in 1943 interned in Italy. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
